B.J.'s literature residencies emphasize the process of writing as both a way of discovering the external world and the internal landscape of the mind and heart. Students first write poems or short stories together as a group, using either short prompts or poems shared aloud in the classroom. B.J. endeavors to introduce them to the best poems from their region and from other cultures, and encourages them to seek out poems they like and share them with others. She also tailors exercises to include material from Nebraska's core curriculum standards in language arts. If time permits, student work may be published as collections for the school library, as individual hand-made books, or on the school's website. B.J. encourages teachers to be active partners in all residency activities and provides at least one teacher in-service, which includes online and hard-copy resources for further literature activities following the residency. B.J. resides in Montana, but frequently works in the Midwest. She looks forward to additional artist residencies in Nebraska, and is open to home stays instead of motels to minimize residency expenses.
