Audience members in John D'Arcy’s storytelling performances are sometimes asked to be characters in his stories. Participants in his residences may get to wear simple costumes, and repeat the words for their characters as John tells the story. John leads storytelling workshops in which students divide into small groups, make masks or hand puppets, or become letters of the alphabet who are going to the 'Magic Kingdom of the Dictionary' where they will become words. Students create their own stories and learn storytelling basics, practice their stories and tell them in front of classmates, teachers and parents. Students always have the opportunity to bring their own costumes and props to enhance their stories. John teaches creative writing from the story idea to the final copy, with elements of his own published children's book (The Magic Letters of the Alphabet, c. 2011) as examples.
