Michael James is an artist and Professor of Textiles, Clothing and Design at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Although he was trained as a painter and printmaker, his quilts are known worldwide for their unique ideas and modern ways of using the medium. He has also written many books about quilt making ideas and techniques.
He works with many opposites in his ideas about putting together a quilt. His artwork shows us the constant tension between order and disorder or chaos. He also explores the world we see and how it relates to the world we imagine or cannot see. He is interested in beauty versus ugliness, and concealment versus revelation. He works with the traditional hand-made technique of quilting to create images using the most modern technology (computers and cameras).
